Ahhh 1943... my parents were both only a year old... ...and the Royal Canadian Mint produced this error, a 1943 Tombac 5c, struck on a silver sterling (Newfoundland) 10-cent planchet.

Love the error Canadian nickel and the amazing colours on that Australian penny! Here's a 'wheatie' from France - a zinc 20-centime piece issued by the Vichy Government in 1942. This was a new design for this year, showing the denomination in figures. High inflation during and just after the War meant that these coins had a short life in circulation: they were demonetised in 1947.

In 1942, Canada issued two different 5c Coins. Due to the demand for nickel for the war effort, late in 1942 "Tombac" (a brass alloy) was substituted for nickel. Because of the brownish colour, the coins had 12 sides so they would not be confused with copper cents. It was 1963 before they reverted back to the round nickel.
