Hey guys, I've been lurking around here for quite a while but this is my first post. I wanted to get some opinions on grades and if it's worth sending this coin in for grading. I know it isn't a rare date or anything, but it has sentimental value to me as I inherited it! This coin has gotten me interested... and addicted... to coins. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

A lot of "chatter" marks. I'd give it a 60-61 grade.

The pics say AU55 but it might pull a low MS grade in-hand. It is not worth certifying to most people since it's value is a modest premium to melt value. This is a gold bullion coin.

It is a really nice coin, (I have one myself), but I wouldn't bother to get it graded.
Perhaps you could enclose it in a screw capsule, so you, and those you show it to, can handle it safely without dropping. In a capsule, it would still have it's heavy tactile feel.
Just enjoy!
Lucky you!

These are my favorite U.S. coins. Unfortunately they are waaay to expensive for me to buy one.

Lovely coin ... and an outstanding example of USA coinage history.

Congratulations for owning such a coin ... whatever it grades ... the coin should be priceless to the owner.

I would need a loupe to grade this one, looking for wear on the high points of the design.
For example
Libery's nose, knees, hands and right boob on the obverse, and
the eagles eyebrow, beak, leading edge of wings and high points of the feathers on the reverse.
There are quite a few small tiny nicks.

U.S. gold is relatively soft, and the large flan size of the double eagle makes them very vulnerable to nicks and scratches and hard to achieve high MS grades in unworn examples.
From the pictures I see here, MS61.
