Hi,
I'm new to collecting coins and I've searched through the posts on cleaning uncleaned Roman coins. For my first batch of coins, I am going to start with a bath of distilled water for some and olive oil for others. I've never done this before, and I am curious regarding the results of each method (darkening with the olive oil is a frequent comment).
So I've got my distilled water, my olive oil, my bamboo skewers... One aspect of cleaning I've missed in the previous posts is the suggested container for soaking. Is a clear plastic ziplock okay, or is there some reason to use glass or ceramic?

Personally I don't feel comfortable with plastic containers, so I use either glass or porcellain/ceramic containers.

For DW or OO there is nothing wrong with plastic tubs. If you get the type with the lid on they are best for DW and stops evaporation if the coin is going to remain in soak for a few weeks or months. Also handy so that you can give them a good shake as you pass by them.

 i don't think it really matters much. I used just whatever old stuff I could find around the house (old butter containers, whatever). |

Thanks for the answers.
One other basic question - is soaking in batches of half dozen or so okay, or should they be soaked individually?
Anything that looks like bronze disease I assume should be treated separately.

Anything with BD should be kept separate including brushes, sticks, blades etc.
Yes you can soak more than one coin at a time. The more coins you have, the more often you are likely to have to change the water. Do this when it becomes cloudy. Once they have been soaking a while, they will show different stages of cleaning. You might want to separate them out, keep the cleaner ones together.

to the community I prefer using glass but using old Tupperware containers is OK also. |
