According to the seller it was covered in clay, how could anyone grade that? ..it would be a shame not to see it. IMO

Yes, but will some more careful conservation you could have removed the clay with out the cleaning. In my experience (speaking as someone who metal detects), a large body of metal detectorists are not coin people. It is more about the hunt for them, and then quickly finding out what they found. If they found something rare that is part of the thrill for them. Most of them I have spoken to truly don't have a clue why a coin collector wouldn't want their rare coin that they cleaned up. I've seen guys with what were once nice ancient coins that they ruined completely cleaning up to make them shiny or with a electrolysis process.

Wow that was an amazing coin when it was lost. I agree probably mint state when dropped.Another example of not having proper knowledge in coin conservation. If I had that when found NCS would have been on speed dial. still saleable though .

I'm sure there are worse ways to get the clay off, still a good looking coin.

I think it's only worth about $100 now.

Quote: I think it's only worth about $100 now. I would disagree, market value for this would be around $300.

how would one get the clay off then? a long soak in water would do most of the work, but I would see some sort of rubbing needed.

That is a shame for sure but, I think it's still worth quite a bit, more than $50 I'm sure.

Problem coins are difficult to value and usually sell for less than what you think.
I'll stand by my $100 (maybe $150) value.

This coin trends at $650 in EF. An AU Details (which thia coin is) should be able to get $300, or atleast $250. Unless you're suggesting that the coin is worth less than 10% of trends just due to it's cleaning. Even though the coin is cleaned, it is still saleable, it's not some bent, holed, badly damaged cull.

i agree, I think that the clay would have been useless to keep on the coin. but clay is pretty easy to clean off am I right? honesty is key in this listing...
But why did he not add other pictures?
