Although it is a bit of a shame that this scarcer date/mm coin has been altered, it does bear a very unusual carving. What do you guys think? Here you have Napoleon III wearing a German helmet, as a comment on the French debacle at Sedan in 1870, which effectively ended the Franco Prussian War. The debacle was repeated there in 1940. These coins are collected but I'm not sure what they sell for these days. Search cgb.fr or ebay.fr for "monnaie satirique". "Two minutes ago I would have sold my chances for a tired dime." swamperbob Pillar of the Community United States 5362 Posts	Posted 02/21/2015 8:40 pm Looks like one of the very numerous "Sudan" issues only one that was never finished. The battle of Sudan took place in 1870 but all of the Napoleon III bronze coins were targeted for carving. The clue is the military helmet that has been placed on his head. There were even some satirical tokens made for the Sudan war. These are very interesting tokens and form an entire sub-field. Report this Post to the Staff

I like the way they used N3's hair to create decor on the front of the helmet, as well as the decoration on the collar. The only one of these I have is a silver 50 centimes stamped SEDAN.
