So here is the cob that I dug very clots to the tree coin. Not quite as pretty but it's my first Hammered Coin and I was psyched to find such an amazing spill

Thanks for showing it. It is a one real of Philip IV, Potosi Mint, Assayer "E" with two denominations, one date, one assayer and about half of a mint mark, yet everything is there. The really neat thing about it is that this is what they look like "as struck," and not clipped, meaning it went into the ground with little to no circulation. If you put the two coins together in the same pocket, the Massachusetts silver would have been minted between 1675 and 1682, (despite being back-dated to 1652 - a year without a King of England) and the Philip IV cob we know dates to 1664. I'd say they were lost in the very early 1700s, perhaps at about the time of the Castine Maine hoard, assumed lost circa 1705, which was discovered in the 1840s, loaded with Pine Tree Shillings. These two coins would have been in circulation at the time of the witch hysteria, so who knows who might have lost them. Consider looking up the history of the locale where they were found to see if any excitement happened round there, back about then. You may be able to make a connection to a particular historical event which would lend then a provenance not to be denied. Very Cool!

Pistareen I love all the great info. Interestingly this area had settlement from about 1630 to 1675. In 1675 the natives attacked this settlement and absolutely annihilated it. I've often wondered if they could have been lost during this particular event. The tree coin having so little wear and now as you say the cob as well it really seems like it lines up well. They were found on the very edge of a steep river bank. I don't believe this area was settled for several years after this event took place

Great little cob. I'm assuming it's 2 Reales but I know next to nothing about these. I need to go detecting with you!
