1703 English Crown of Queen Anne struck with the VIGO legend to commemorate the naval battle of Vigo Bay in Northern Spain. It is commonly asserted that the silver coins of 1702-1703 with the VIGO legend were "minted from silver seized from Spanish ships", however it's unlikely to be true for most of the mintage -- the Spanish had off-loaded much of the silver before their ships were captured. Sir Isaac Newton, Master of The Royal Mint, received just over 4500 pounds (weight) of silver (£14,000) as of June 1703. It was a great naval victory but much of the seized cargo belonged to English and Dutch merchants.

worldnumis, is this tical about 30mm? That's more of a half crown sized coin. Very interesting coin, none-the-less!

Cool coin ^ ..never saw one of those before. One undecipherable specimen deserves another. Ethiopia 1892; one birr of Manelik II: This is 40 mm of 0.835 silver. There certainly are some 'odd' alphabets in use around the world.
