My initial focus for collecting was the portrait eight reales of Charles III of Spain. To be honest, I have become quite bored of seeing his bust; and those of monarchs in general. When I broadened my collecting interest to world crowns I became particularly enamored with other types of designs. One of my favorite non-portrait designs is the pezza della rose, minted in Livorno, part of the Italian state of Tuscany. I believe the pezza della rose is named for being of the pezza da otto reali type of silver coin (piece of eight reales) as well as of its design subject, the rose bush. It was one of several types of silver crowns that traded in Livorno and I assume this type was on par with the Spanish eight reales. This one is from 1707, during the reign of Cosimo III, the penultimate head of the famous Medici family.

Isle of Man 1970 crown showing a Manx Cat. I Being a cat lover, I'm very fond of this crown. Unfortunately it led the way to the IOM's flood of unnecessary commemoratives that has never stopped since...

I think I like that one more. It might be the line, because I think the crown's cat image is nicer, or at least friendlier.

Glad you like my cat crowns, jbuck! From a coin showing a cat to one showing a hat - a 1984 Panamanian 1-Balboa, which I actually received in change in Panama City around Christmas time that year!

1633 Thaler of Christian Louis, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg. Over its history, the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg consisted of many principalities, including Calenberg, home to the House of Hanover and of George I, King of Great Britain. The mintmaster initials and crossed-axes privy mark, place the origin of this coin in Clausthal, a prominent mining city in the Upper Harz mountains in North-Central Germany.

I didn't know those Torrijos types actually circulated! Here's mine. Panama, 1 balboa, 1983 And another Eisenhower-like coin from Panama. This one's pretty weird because the date is unclear. Was it made in 2004, or was it made in 1999 because they were absolutely sure that President Moscoso would last another five years? Anyway, this commemorates the return of the Panama Canal to Panama, the new millennium, and President Mireya Moscoso. Confusing, but nice. Panama, 1 balboa, 1999/2004/?

Napoleon forced the Portuguese royal court to flee Lisbon and establish Rio de Janiero as the seat of the Portuguese Empire in 1808. Prince Regent Joăo VI authorized the counterstamping of Spanish 8 reales, making them official coinage of Brazil, valued at 960 reis. Starting in 1810, the 8 reales were fully overstruck.
