No, not really, sometimes I find those with my detector here, but most of the time in a verry poor state, so determination will be verry difficult, but next to that, I had to draw a line somewhere, so I focust more on getting series and country's to complete, as on single pieces, somewhere I still must have some of them, but they are not in my collection.

Next to that, you need a verry good library to identify and class those coins, so, for me it's on step to far back in time.

Greetings, Carl

Short by where I live was a larger roman fortress, at Nijmegen, here rearby we had several roman findings as well, the romans got here up to the rivers, and left a few settlements.

If you want I can try to find you some info abouth it, altrough I think most of that will be in dutch.

and they might be in good shape. Roman coins ( and greek I suppose) I think are the only coins you can clean. Once you do they often look very nice and mostly intact.

No, sorry ojo, but most of the time, becouse they come from the "uiterwaarden", the fields along the river, they are bad, almost not recognisable, becouse of a dutch law, farmers have to inject the shi.. direct into the ground, instead of spredding it on the fields, becouse of the amoniak, coins are manny times half faded before they get found :-(

Idead, it is, only verry few times we can find here better pieces, most of the time when it got high water, now with the floods in central europe (germany, Austria and Switserland), there is a good schance that there get some items more down stream, at the riverside's and smaller beeches bethween the "kribben", small stone breakers, there is a chance that some can be found later up the season.

Greetings, Carl
Rest in Peace

Ojo:

I don't exactly collect ancient coins, but somewhere down through the years I have added several to my coin collection...all Roman I think.

Anyway, reading this thread gives me the incentive to start looking and try and find where I stored them. When I find them I will either post pictures, or give a description, and try and find out what I have.

Over the years, I have collected a few hundred ancient and medieval coins. It is a fascinating area, but with so many different ones to choose from, it is easy to get overwhelmed, unless you focus on one particular series (which I will never do).

When I have more time, I will post some images from my collection. The one in my avatar at the time of this writing is a posthumous silver denarius of Faustina Sr., wife of Antoninus Pius. This one is a great example of Roman artistic style.
