I use a rubber as non slide surface to hold the coin... Is cheap, protect the coin from scratches on the opposite side, easy to find...

@Athalbert - Ah, hmmm, a rubber what? Eraser? Pad? ? something else?
I use a clear sheet of mylar to protect the glass stage of my microscope and pad the coin too.
When I first starting doing this in the late 80s I bought a small Tasco binocular unit, which I still have, for $250 that is so small I can tote it to a show in a case if I want to (almost never do now.) It required an external light source. But since then I was able to get a much larger binocular unit with two kinds of lighting built in for about the same price. I know they have come down even more since then. I don't know how well a USB scope would work for this, since the movement can get rather tricky when it is directed from on-screen. Old Style binocular scopes give you a direct view so that "up" is always UP.

A needle is wonderful for small details... I wanted a "soft" brass punch, I couldnīt find one in the market so... I built it! Cheap, reliable, soft with the patina and strong with dirt... ergonomic...

Irbguy, I get 9" x 12" sheets of craft foam at wall*Mart for well under a dollar. This might work for the non skid surface. I also use them in a picture frame when I mount coins. With a fabric over the top.

Itīs a very good idea but... Doesnīt suffer any damage the edges of the coin? perhaps you can improve it adding a silicone cover to avoid direct metal to metal contact...

I've never had any damage, these are made to handle delicate watch parts.

I use a pin, held in one hand, with the coin held in the other. No magnification, just natural light. A little bit of DW nearby and a paper towel to help remove the dirt.

I think Pish went too long in the soup also. In her desire to see all the green vanish she has exceeded the recommended time. I personally try to keep things under 10 minutes ! Unless there is some very good reason the possibility of stripping off 'good' stuff is to be avoided. Enthusiasm can be a liability !
