Well hello everybody! I'm new to this and have recently been reading up on this forum and it has greatly sparked my interest, so this week I went down to the bank and picked up $370 total in a couple different trips and found 2-90% and 10-40% which was pretty exciting for my first time! Anyways, I went back to my bank again today to see about possibly getting a $500 box and they were completely out of halves, looks like someone beat me there. I was wondering if anyone could give me a time frame as to when they might receive more or how I could get them to order me a box or two? Like I said I'm new and any info would be very helpful, thanks

Most banks want no part of half dollars and gladly get rid of them. So naturally they usually don't have them by the box (unless another roll searcher dumped his there. Finding a bank willing to order you a box might be a challenge, then again might not. Having an account at the bank you plan on ordering halves from is pretty much a must. In fact I discussed ordering halves from my current bank before I opened my account there. (then again I did the same thing at my last bank...then they stopped after ordering one box). I've had one bank tell me when they order coin and when it comes in and another bank refuse to tell me for security reasons. But the bank I use now calls me when they come in. Remember that the banks get charged a surcharge for incoming coin as well as shipping out bags of coin. No bank is going to order you coin and take it back when you are done searching them without giving you grief. My dump bank has several branches in the area and I spread them around. Sometimes I deposit them, and sometimes I cash them in. Good luck in your quest for silver and welcome to the forum!

Well the rolls I got were the yellow and white wrapped ones from the fed, so wouldn't it be safe to assume that they will get another box or two with their routine coin shipment? And if so, approximately how often would that be?

My bank is amazing about boxes. I had no idea how lucky I was. I just have to ask and they do it with zero trouble. I even offered to re-roll my halves that I ordered and they told me dumping them in the machine was fine.

After 10 skunk boxes in a row - I got 8 40% from a box I scored at a random bank stop in a nearby town. Thought this skunk run was going to last forever...

Well after reading almost every post on this topic over the past few months I've finally broken down and signed up. I guess it's my time to brag a lil too.
I've been searching halves for almost a year now and have had what I believe to be slightly higher than average luck. If I had to guess I would say I've gone through 10-15k in CWR's over the year and 3k in boxes in the past few weeks. For all the trouble it's gotten me 360-40% and 36-90% five of those have some old balding guy on them? All but 7 40% and 1 90% came from the CWR's

Also does anyone go through them in any other way than checking each date? In particular Don :)

This "guy I know" has a couple of different ways to go through them... fast! And not the throwing of a roll against a concrete wall as mentioned somewhere else in this topic. lol

P.S. sorry about the balding joke Bengie

I have not tried it, but I've read that an accurate digital scale can discern even a single 40%. That way you don't have to open each roll...

Yes, I thought about the weight as well, but there are two problems with this:

1. You potentially throw away chances to get 87 P&D, and other not intended for circulation (NIFC) coins, like 2002-present, proofs, and oddballs (like I've gotten a Connecticut colored quarter reverse design on one, a counterstamped one, and 5 1974 Doubled die obverses). Some don't care about these things and only silver hunt.

2. Also, weight is not good for rolls that might have just 1 40% in there. 40% weighs 11.5 g, and the clads weight 11.3 g, but there is a small range of tolerable weights for both and those ranges overlap. In other words, if you weigh a roll and it is 0.2 g heavier, it still may not have silver in the roll! (and vice-versa). Weight WILL work if the roll has a 90% (12.5 g). 1 g difference is large (if you have a good balance). Also keep in mind that some halfs circulated heavily (from casinos) and they would be expected to have a little lower mass. I would NOT suggest weight as being reliable for silver hunting, except for detecting rolls that have 1 or more 90% silver in them. If a roll has maybe 3 or more 40% in there (extremely unlikely), then weight might detect it.

your also forgetting that many clad halves have lost wieght do to heavy casino use. Also older halves like walkers that circulated for a good 30-50 years before being pulled from circulation also lose weight as well. That may interfere with the scales and skew results.

XoG: Casino use was stated in my original post right before yours, before I made an edit on a few spelling mistakes.

Well said about the weight guys. I forgot to say I also found a full roll of nifc's in my second box.

1-2002 D
1-2003 D
3-2003 P
4-2004 D
8-2004 P
2-2005 D

I realize that only adds up to 19. I threw on back in the sea to finish a roll so I could get another box. So at least I know how one got into circulation. Has anyone formed any ideas on how so many nifc's are getting set free besides the obvious ways like the silvers?

From what I've read about nifc finds in box's I guess that's not to bad.
And do these shinny slugs of old electrical wire and plumbing fittings have any value above face if they are still in good shape.
