My first thought was medal not a token.Anything written on the edge? Any sign of it being in a bezel at one time? John1  |

Good instinct you have there. Actually the outer rim looks worked a little. Might have been filed or sanded in places... But it is perfectly round like a cent but as thick as a nickel. Looks like brass, bronze or gold.

I have a very similar token as well. Same looks to be Lincoln on the Obverse,but I have a totally different reverse. Someone care to help? I actually like the look of the token. Same obverse:  Different reverse.  |

It weighs 4.9 grams. I find it a little heavy for it's size. It's actually thicker than a nickel. More like the thickness of 2 cents together. Maybe it was a centerpiece for a medal and fell out or was removed.

I just checked on ebay and it seems the one that I have is a Lincoln/Washington token. |

Yeah, I think that's what it was. But you have to be careful with ebay because there are a lot of replicas of valuable coins & tokens selling there. Yours looks Bronze & the ones selling might be brass. |

Bronze is heavier than brass if I'm not mistaken.

I recently bought a book, titled, "Abraham Lincoln - The Images of His Greatness. Reading it this morning, I came across a picture of one like you have. It is actually an assassination medal. Here is what the book says on pg 116; "The broken column symbol: the reverse of this small US Mint medal, depicts a "Broken Column," emblematic of Lincoln's life having been cut short. Dies were originally made by Anthony C. Paquet in the fall of 1865, but new dies were cut four years later by William Barber to meet demand for the popular memento." That being said, I believe the one you have is a replica though... Thanks for the links. Already saw the Darker one but the other look a lot like mine. Not sure the finished texture is the same though. I know there are replicas but supposedly there are also Re-strikes. Do you think they would make a modern day replica out of Bronze rather than the cheaper Brass...? This one is a lot heavier that a coin of the same size in brass would be so I 99% sure it's Bronze. The Originals I think were made in Silver as well or Only in silver & the re-strikes in Bronze and later the replicas in Brass. Need more research on this.

The U.S. Mint produced some small medals that I know were available in the 1980s (I have that Washington/Lincoln one), they might still be selling them.
