It's not a short cross, looks like a long cross penny. More than that I can't tell.

Agree with nap it's a broken long cross penny,can't say more than that I'm afraid.

If you can make out a full or partial name, sequence of letters or even a single letter that could help narrow it down.

I'm not an expert in this subject, but it might help those who are.

Well, I can't make out any letters, but there is a privy mark, a pellet to the right of the neck of the portrait (may or may not be one to the left as well). These are found on some issue of pennies of Edward IV/Henry VI, or thereabouts. The bust is also distinctive, with shoulders that are "voided" (drawn in outline), like this penny of Henry VI:
