It is definitely a zinc cent. Look below the memorial. You can see the lines of bubbles associated with copper-plated zinc. Copper cents never have them.

Cascade, it just dawned on me what you said. I thought you were talking about me being grounded. Sorry about that, I'll be more careful. TC, You may be correct about the authenticity of this piece. I am told it's quite rare, but it is bubble free.

No worries coinmasters. I'm not even sure what your sorry about, maybe I missed it. I just like injecting a touch of humor whenever possible... crossing my fingers for you!

I'm talking about the lines underneath the memorial. They are only seen on copper-plated zinc cents.

Is this a big deal? Wasn't 1983 the year the switched from copper to zinc?

Stampvirgin, this is on par with a 1944 steel cent or 1943 copper... A VERY big deal if authentic

Just another Zincoid. They are out there to be found, just not this one. Thanks to all for the input.

Yes, cwb. I know I did. If six or even ten have been found, I would think at least forty exist. just think how many have not been searched. Too bad this wasn't one. It would have been the prettiest.

Since 1943 and 44 transitional errors are much easier to spot due to the coin's color, there are probably more of these out there, as the older ones would also have been easier to catch by the mint's quality control. I suggest to anyone with a fairly accurate scale to check your 1983 cents- you never know if you might find one. I got my AWS scale on Amazon for $10 or $12.
