It can work, but my guess you would need to develop a keen eye for undervalued or underappreciated pieces.

And a BIG help would be to be a young collector. Older collectors like helping out younger ones.

I have first hand experience here. As I am currently a young numismatist, I often get great deals from dealers at a mid-sized show I attend. In the past I have been given several things by dealers, including an AU 1896 Morgan and a 1960 small date cent.
