In my area it seems banks are getting rid of coin counters - which makes dropping off much more of a pain as you have to re-roll everything. This is also true for folks who just have a jar full of coins they want to deposit.

By doing so the banks are helping to make mintage numbers higher, especially for cents and nickels. People would just rather sit on them that take the time to cash in.

True. I think there are folks who are trying to avoid cash altogether, which lessens demand, but I see plenty of people paying for things with $100 bills too.

Maybe it is high time to stop making the two useless coins, the zincoln and the Jefferson .unbelievable ,turning out two coins with little to no reason to exist ,than other than a tax token, that cost more to make than the face value.

That's gonna make things a bit difficult for one cent and five cent coin roll hunters. But I wouldn't have an issue any more with dropping off nickel rolls at this bank.

I just checked the mint web page, and so far this year than have made over 4,000,000,000 cents. My understanding is that production is tied to demand - so even though everyone says they are worthless, somehow there is still a high demand. Granted CCF roll hunters account for about 1 billion of that, but still...

The high demand exists because most cents only flow in one direction...
Mint -> Fed -> Banks -> Stores -> Customer -> Change Jar (or rubbish bin).

Mint -> Fed -> Banks -> Stores -> Customer -> Change Jar (or rubbish bin). And that is exactly why no one will miss the cent if they are eliminated like Canada and other enlightened places have done.

I wonder if coin star has fed into this. I was used to getting coins counted for free at the bank, so now paying coin star to do it seems like I am getting ripped off - so I don't use them. This can lead to spare change building up.

Random out of the blue post... but I wish I came up with Coinstar. Think of all the things found in them over the years. O.o

The sad day is approaching when none of the banks will do this at all, free or otherwise.
