I stopped by a local pawn shop today to see if they had any "junk" Franklin halves, and if so how much they were asking. I was told they were 12 and 1/2 times face value. I thought that was reasonable and went through a large box of them. I picked out a number of them, including what looked to be a 1958 proof. That is the cheapest price I've see on them in a long time.

15 x 1 here at all the LCS I've been to.. Usually mix of walkers, Franklin and Kennedy with an occasional barber and all 15 x 1

The reason I thought the price was reasonable was because the lowest I had seen recently here locally was at a coin show. One dealer had them at 13 times face, and sold them out almost immediately. The pawn shop I mentioned had been at 14 times for a long time. I wish I could find them at 11 times face!
Rest in Peace

Within those ranges of 11-15 X face it is a heck of a lot of fun to go through, especially if they are mixing in a few Walkers and Barbers with the Franklins. A fine time to enjoy and every once in a while you find a winner. Even if you don't find a treasure, the things you learn by being hands on with more coins is always valuable.

Yes, I have been quite lucky. My local dealer sort of looks down upon scrap silver. Although he pays a fair price when buying 80%, 90% and 99.9%, he sells the 80% and 90% for spot, the generic bullion rounds he gets are Spot + $1 and the silver maples/eagles he has are spot + $3. Despite this, he always seems to have an abundance of scrap, so much so that he says he sends 500oz out every month to be melted just because he can't justify storing it all. I often pick through his scrap boxes, among other things I have found, Liberty Seated dimes and Half Dimes, 2x 3-cent silvers (1852, 1853) in G-4 and plenty of 18th and 17th century world silver (usually 92.5%). I never find any Barber halves (although he has plenty of Barber quarters and dimes in G-VG), but he has plenty of G-VG common date walkers at face.

Unfortunately, I bought a lot of scrap when silver had dropped to $22/oz thinking I got a good deal, and am now regretting it, so I have that stashed away and focus exclusively on numismatic purchases rather than hoarding bullion/scrap silver. I have not been to the shop in 3 months now, as it's much easier to find deals and a better selection on numismatic items online.

My LCS has all 90% for 13x face right now. I just bought a bunch of quarters including some AG to G Barbers and some G to VG standing liberty. Got some nice-ish Walking Liberty halves in VG to VF.

They were charging 13X face two weeks ago also when silver was $1 more an ounce.
