Even though it's slabbed, that *can't* be completely natural toning.

i have one of these but its in terrible condition... date is barely readable and it has a hole drilled in it

I have a 1862 as well, mcanniz. I found it in a foreign coin bin and snagged it for $0.25

It's in XF details, but has a hole & a clip (like someone took scissors and cut the rim, literally)

Pull up the Heritage auction from earlier this week on their site, ha.com, and look - there was a whole run of MS65 and higher and also PF64+ proofs.

No argument there. But I thought it awfully coincidental that the "C" device on the reverse had its blue toning so isolated from the other colors. But looking at some of the other examples, I guess it isn't so coincidental after all. Perhaps the change in surfaces at the devices affects the toning pattern.
