I was all set to put these 3 coins up for auction on ebay, when, googling around about the coins I was going to sell, I came upon information relating to varieties 1a, 1b & 1c for at least one of the coins, and maybe two. The identifying information, however, about the letters D, E and F pointing or not pointing to a bead, proved useless to me, as for the life of me I could not figure out how any of those letters could be said to "point". Looking for any help at all pertaining to what variety one or more of these coins might be (and if that translates into value in any way). I know little about UK coins and am feeling a bit lost. I would also appreciate help identifying a grade for these coins - as I could find nothing online pertaining to grading standards. Thanks once again in advance. I used the following book:
"The Identification of British 20th century Silver Coin varieties"
David J Groom
Published 2010
No varieties listed for the 1930 florin or the 1931 half crown.
The 1928 half crown has quite a few varieties listed. I assume the 3rd from last is the obverse of this coin. If so, it appears to be Obverse 2 because of the brow. It would make it easier to identify if you produce a close-up of the face around the eye, forehead and particularly the brow.
The most certain way to work out which reverse you have is to count the beads. Reverse B has 157 beads and reverse C has 158. ( Reverse A is the pre 1927 variety, quite clearly different ).
Without counting beads, I think you have reverse B. If you extend the vertical line of the "D" in FID towards the edge, it appears to point to a gap. In reverse C it points to a bead.
If I am right, you have variant 2B but I am no expert. Cant help with value as my catalogue is at home.

The half crowns are Spinks 4037, and the Florin is Spinks 4038 if you need catalogue numbers. I only have out of date prices (Spinks 2002 volume here) Listing the 1928 £2-f £5-VF, £10-EF and 20-UNC, the 1931 £2-F, ££5-Vf, £10-Ef and £25-Unc with the florin £2-F, ££5-Vf, £10-Ef and £25-Unc also.
Spinks doesn't appear to list the varieties and neither does My "Great British Pocket Reference Book" which is quite good on varieties.
I would presume it is possible that a similar issue to the 10pences currently circulating exists (that on some coins the letters align with the beading and on others the uprights are in-between the beads, something that is very hard to differentiate unless you know what you are looking for, and something of an irrelevance to me unless there are vastly differing values between them.)

Thank you for the larger picture. Unfortunately the coin is rather worn and I am unable to tell.
A good reference for grading British coins is:
The Standard Guide to Grading British Coins
Derek Francis ALLEN
Rotographic 2010.
From photos in this book all your coins would appear somewhere around F in grade, or maybe slightly lower. I am very much still a beginner, and recommend this book if you are getting into UK coins.
From The Coin Yearbook 2015 prices are given as:
1930 Florin F=£4, VF=£7
1928 half crown F=£5, VF=£8
1931 half crown same as above

Thanks everyone once again for the helpful information, and for the references. Just the help I needed. I've also inherited some old British copper coins (real beauties, I think) that I may post some time just for show. |

Great bust on the 31 half-crown, very little wear. You can still see the part in HM's hair.
