Classic Hawaii Five-O Episode- "The $100,000 Nickel"

For all the YNs and those that do not know, Hawaii Five-O was a crime drama tv show that aired from 1968-80. The series revolved around a Hawaii state police unit- Hawaii Five-O.

An episode from 1973 had a plot line involving the theft of a 1913 Liberty nickel from a coin show in Honolulu- "The $100,000 nickel". Several other coins were featured at the show- 1879 Flowing Hair Stella $4, Octagonal and Round $50 Pan-Pac commems, 1796 Draped Bust $1, and 1795 Capped Bust Eagle $10- but the star of the show was the five-of-a-kind nickel.

I have known about this episode for years but I have never been able to catch the show until tonight It was quite fun to watch as I have not seen an episode of Hawaii Five-O for years. It was awesome to see the plotline of a major tv show involve a legendary coin- even if the tv show is 35 years old. The aftermath of the theft is the stuff of nightmares for coin collectors- the nickel was getting passed around from person to person in a human shell game but McGarrett solves the crime and Dano books 'em. Stand-in nickels were used for all of the action shots and the real thing, the Olsen Specimen, was actually used in the show for close ups.
