It may be just a slight amount of grease and grit that hasn't been pushed into the deeper devices of the die. (The fields are the outside edge of the die) A slight amount of grease/diamond polish maybe have struck there while moving the die after a polishing.

Thanks coop. That's exactly what I was thinking, a limited amount of grease, which did not stop the devices from being effected. I must say though this is quite an unusual Greaser

I will add some more wood to the fire. I found a WA State Quarter last night with a similar but more faint condition. At first glance it appears to be a clash with Washingtons' bust from the Obverse. I traced an outline around it and also darkened it to make it more visible. Nothing on the obverse and no damage to the devices on the reverse as should happen with a strike through?

You should make a separate post but that is ghosting.

Thanks Tweak

Just curious still though. What about the large V under the 88 in the date. Nothing like that on the obverse to ghost? Learning on the go so I am not that familiar with ghosting.

I will post a new topic from now on. Thanks for that tip.
Rest in Peace

It might be die damage in those areas.

I don't understand something: If this was a strike through grease and grit, why aren't any of the devices affected? Wouldn't the pressure of the strike smear that around linearly instead of containing it just to the fields?

The fields are the highest points on the dies, grease can get on the higher surfaces, and not into the devices (recessed areas) of the die. Grease, in the term referred to here, is not like pure lubrication grease, it could be a harder bit of grunge, a mixture of metal pieces, dirt and anything else...

I have a Canadian dollar, Struck Through Grease, with the black "grease" retained on the surface of the coin. That coin is going to pay a visit to the SEM at work soon, just to see what the "grease" actually is...
