Can anybody suggest any habits to use when acquiring $25 boxes of pennies. Can you order them in very large quantities? If so how specifically at M&T banks? Thanks for reading my topic.

How to Get a Box 'O Coins by ChildOfTheWheat 1. Walk into bank 2. Give the teller $25 3. Ask for a box of pennies 4. Walk out of the bank -As a side note, dont forget to leave WITH the box  You can order them in as large as a quantity as you want, I think... The most I've ever ordered was $50 and they had the boxes on hand. Edited by ChildOfTheWheat

It can be tough based on your local branches. I have some banks who get snotty when I ask for $25 in pennies (ex: "why would anyone need this many pennies?" "we can't get rid of that many pennies"). For that reason I'll go in and get $10 in pennies and $20-40 in nickels at those locations. At other banks I will just go for a box. One disadvantage to asking for a straight up box is that you likely won't get customer wrapped rolls if they have a full box on hand. That isn't necessarily a bad thing but just keep it in mind. IMO the advantage to customer wrapped rolls is that you could get really lucky and get someone's drop off of a Wheat penny collection. It's not as likely in machine wrapped rolls however I did find 3 indian head pennies in machine rolls a few months ago so anything is possible!! Good luck with your search and welcome to the site! |

The only bank I've successfully gotten boxes from is fifth third. The most I've ordered at one time was 6 boxes  , however, after I ordered the six boxes they asked me to keep it to one box a month. ChildOfTheWheat, you forgot a step in between 3. and 4. Once you ask for a box of pennies make sure you LEAVE with your $25 or the box of pennies . They may appreciate you leaving the $25 there, but you won't.  Edited by WheatHunter

I have found that large branches often have cent and nickel boxes on hand. The smaller branches do not. I have had luck ordering boxes of half dollars, but they come with a fee. (10 cents/roll). I figger $5 for a box of halves is just the cost of the hobby.
I once (mistake) ordered a box of cents from that branch--$5 charge for a $25 box. Never again!
I found a few branches with boxes on hand, so I ask for one box and then don't go back to that bank the next week. I had a Wells Fargo branch (small) tell me I had to return coins to the same branch I got them from (!!). I rarely ask for more than one box at a time, but a large Wells Fargo branch (different branch) is happy (well, tolerant) to give me a box of cents and a box of nickels in one visit. I haven't pushed my "luck." As time goes by and a branch gets more familiar with me, I'll order a couple/three boxes of halves at once (for a fee of course!). There are a few banks/branches I just go in and get rolls from, without asking for a box. Nobody ever has rolls of halves, so I order whole boxes.
Anybody ever found a good reason to order a box of dollar coins? Can't get Ikes any more--non-circulating.

My bank had no problem handing over about 4 boxes of pennies with no notice. However, the bank across the street gave me a hard time when trying to get a single box.

from my experience it depends on teller and supply. ive never been flat out denied a box, I've had tellers tell me that the supply is low and offer x amount or another denomination. I've also had tellers give attitude, so I just try to avoid those tellers if possible.
If the tellers know you are searching for example I went to get a box this week and the teller asked if I was searching them and told me she only had new shiny boxes, but had $10 in customer wrapped. This was much appreciated, I've had enough 2015 rolls to dump

A few weeks ago I walked into a new bank (new for me) and asked for $5 in pennies. The teller said there would be a $7 "Change order fee". I passed on that one.

At my bank if I call on a Monday before 12:00PM I could order as many boxes as I want...Which is great, because I been ordering $100.00 at a time....All you do is ask them and they will tell you when they order there coin for the week....
