I recently submitted a 1961 Proof Franklin half dollar because is had machine damage on the coin and was still in the mint packaging. I wanted to see what they would say about it and maybe tell me what caused it. What they did was keep my coin and send me a graded PF67 1961 in it's place. They said I got back what I submitted but members of the Jamestown Coin Club observed my coin through a stereo microscope to determine what happened and all agree the coin I received back was not the same coin I sent. Any thoughts (If the pics upload right.... First should be damaged coin, second is what I got back. Notice the scratches through the letters. Both obverse and reverse showed scratches although the reverse was much worse. Did I get the coin back I sent?

My guess is that it was the same coin and the marks was on the cellophane. Just my guess though.

Looks like the same coin. Check out the little hairline off the D in UNITED connecting to the bell support. It's in both pics. Agree damage was on packaging.

edit: Interesting that we are tending to disagree with a coin club who used a microscope.

I've seen marks on the top coin before....on the cellophane. Without ever seeing the coin in hand, it's hard tell other than the obvious die crack that's present on both.

ALL of the major TPG's are extremely accurate with customer coins. The coin you send will be the coin you get back 99.99% of the time. Mistake happen but they are exceedingly rare.

The marks are on the cellophane... It's the same on my 1961 proof set.

Looks like you have an awesome proof coin anyways
