The full Bible verse, Mark 12:11, is "a Domino factum est istud et est mirabile in oculis nostris," "This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes." This verse first appeared on the English gold angel coinage of the Catholic Queen Mary I, but the the Protestant James I left off "mirabile in oculis nostris," as references to miracles sounded too Catholic. Was this token intended to resurrect the phrase, by Catholics in Protestant England? Report this Post to the Staff
