Can anyone tell me if this has a name and what caused it? The groove under the bust continues along the edge to about 2.5k on the right and lighter to about 9k on the left.
John, thanks. I am trying to envision how a die wears so as to produce what would have to be a raised rim with a distinct shoulder concentric to and congruent to the outer rim. Any ideas?
This is simply split plating. The area next to the rim appears, with the coin in hand, to be significantly lower than the field around the date. That turns out to be an optical illusion!
