Is This A Roman Brockage Or Double Struck?

MOJO New Member Canada 33 Posts	Posted 10/12/2015 02:39 am I am selling off my many coins after collecting for 40+ years. In doing so, I have come across many that I don't remember getting and or wasn't familiar with the (possible) err or variety. I have this Roman coin that appears much different that the same coin as seen in many pics on ebay. It appears as if the DIID is restamped & backwards (3rd PIC), along with the extra 'D'. Looking at the reverse side (1st & 2nd pics), it appears as if it is a Brockage, but don't know enough to call it, or am I just seeing things LOL Can anybody help me? lrbguy Pillar of the Community United States 949 Posts	Posted 10/12/2015 09:31 am Sorry to disappoint, but your coin is normal in all respects. Not double struck, and certainly not a brockage. Here is what I see: What you are reading as two 'D's I read as a C and an S in the normal obverse inscription: DN CONSTAN - TIUS PF AVG I need you to confirm on the size and weight of your coin; is it about 18-19mm in diameter? The mintmark is not clear in the photo, but for a falling horseman type with the "D" high in the left field, I am inclined to read it as TCON, for the third officina at Arelate (at a time it was being called "Constantia"). The reverse legend break is type A, MP-RE, so your coin is RIC VIII Arelate 215 for Constantius II. The little round mark behind the bust on the obverse is an accretion. Report this Post to the Staff

Despite my chronic collecting, there is still so much more to know about the North American coins that I dare not start on the Roman :) As in everything else, it will stick with me and in time, I know I will know the ins and out :) Moving forward, the coin is actually flatter as if it were struck again (from the two outer red points) - the just above the shoulder & slightly taking part of the top string...and there is a backwards D within...this is why I thought it was a brockage. I do have to pull it out to confirm it's size, but I will get back to you on that. Thanks again for your reply. Report this Post to the Staff
