cwb Pillar of the Community United States 3463 Posts	Posted 11/10/2015 6:24 pm When you see a flat, shelf like secondary image that is the same on the date as the mint mark, it is a good indication that it is Mechanical Doubling. A doubled die will show both images the same height from the coins surface and have split serifs along with being rounded, not flat. The Mechanical Doubling won't always show on all devices as illustrated on this 1959-D example: Below is a true doubled die. It is a 1983 DDR-001 Photo By Heritage Auction Galleries & http://www.lincolncentsonline.com A doubled die will show wider devices, but Mechanical Doubling will narrow the devices and make them appear to be pushed one direction or another.
