When you see a flat, shelf like secondary image that is the same on the date as the mint mark, it is a good indication that it is Mechanical Doubling.
A doubled die will show both images the same height from the coins surface and have split serifs along with being rounded, not flat.

A doubled die will show wider devices, but Mechanical Doubling will narrow the devices and make them appear to be pushed one direction or another.
