1916-D Mercury Dime, Your Opinion Please

Beymer's reputation is too good for him to be messing with counterfeits, IMO. I've bought many raw key coins from him over the last 25 years that were just fine.

Jack was selling coins long before slabs existed. If he says it's real, it's real. Does that make it problem-free? No. This coin carries such a substantial premium in a slab that there's no reason for any dealer NOT to get it slabbed unless they've already had it body bagged.

When buying key dates like the 16-D Merc it's not only important to think about your opinion of the coin, but the fact that if you ever have to sell it someday, a NGC or PCGS slabbed example will always bring more money than a raw coin, and has a better shot of appreciating in value over the long run. Even if you never plan to sell your 1916-D, you never know what life has in store and spending an extra couple hundred bucks for a nice slabbed example is money in the bank.
