The Royal Mint - It's been an exciting week for UK coin collectors and if you've not been following the announcements on Facebook or Twitter then this article should bring you up to speed! Those of you who have been collecting coins for a few years or more will know that November is normally an exciting time at The Royal Mint, as the coins of the following year are released. So, you'll be excited to learn that on Monday the new coins for 2016 were announced! In total, eight 2016 UK coins have been revealed alongside The Sovereign for 2016.

Anniversaries for William Shakespeare, The Great Fire of London and the Battle of Hastings are all marked on UK coins in 2016. A £2 coin honoring the Army's role in the First World War continues the First World War coin collection, and The Queen's 90th Birthday is also celebrated with a UK coin. 2016 is also the year of the last 'round pound', with the new 12-sided £1 being introduced in 2017. So, without further ado, here are the 2016 coins revealed this week:

Here's the last Round Pound they mention.

The Royal Mint aren't selling it before 2016 tho, so the only way to currently get it is either to buy a set from them, or head over to Westminster Collection and buy a "slabbed" one.

I still am not sure what I am going to find in my change from 2015?

Will there be a £1 shield back with the 5th portrait? Will there be a 50p Shieldback with a 5th portrait? What about £2's? And will I find any commemoratives in the 50p or £2?

The 2016 designs are all very well, but for instance the £1 will not be general release... that means it isn't really a coin to me... and I know it might be the last date £1, but do I really want to buy a set and break it out just so I can boast a full set of them?

I like that they make the odd commemorative, but these days it seems just a few too many (like 5 x £2's in one year almost devalues the idea of unusual commemoratives...)

Still I do like them... :)

That should answer your queries David.

I agree the 2016 £1 is a bit of a con, especially when you consider they've added it to their Coin Hunt folders, which are supposed to be filled by hunting through your change !!

I don't see a problem with all the commemoratives... I'd personally like to see more lower denomination coins having commemorative designs though. They make more pennies and two pences than any other coin (if you disregard the cu-ni replacement program which has dramatically increased the 5p and 10p production numbers) so why not put commemorative designs on them ? (Bottom line = COST !!)

Thanks for the info...but I have the top row (4th portrait) and from the second row I got the 1p,2p,5p,10p and 20p and I have not seen the others yet...

I am getting impatient for the 5th portrait £1, £2 and 50p... and the Britannia £2 looks a sweet design but I wonder if this is going to be a challenge (many of these coins are instantly hoarded... for instance how often do you get an Olympic 50p in your change these days? I have a packaged set but still missing many from my set from circulation)

On the upside not only have we got the new 12 sided £1 to look forwards to but the Winston Churchill £5 note... lets see how everyone likes polymer money over here...
