Used to be that you went to U.S. industrial giants Dow or Dupont for these bulk chemicals or a German giant like BASF, but over the years they became uncompetitive with Chinese sources. It is cheaper to refine metals in China and you get a better price for the refined metal at the Shanghai Exchange. That means that in the short term to medium term metals will flow to China and not come back unless someone here is willing to pay the carry over the price traded in China, if the CCP even allows it under the licensing regime.

Sure hope they do a lot of testing of any metal bars coming from China.

For jewelry, the discounts are steeper because 8k, 10k, 14k, 18k gold just sits if it cannot be refined

The point with lower carat gold is that it doesn't need to be refined, it can just be melted and reused for manufacturing.

9ct, 18ct and 22ct are common in the UK.

For jewellery practice, we used to buy 9ct sheets and wire; more experienced students used 18ct but I didn't get that far.

How do you bring production back of anything (not just precious metals) with the labor and other cost so much higher then where is has been coming from for 30 to 40 years. The price has to go up. Silver and Gold are just the beginning. Industries and factories have been packed up and shipped elsewhere starting at around the 1970s or even earlier. The rabbit hole goes deep.

Labor costs in Switzerland are high as well. But they have found few things where they are really good at and sell those. It seems they are doing very well for themselves.

Melt on junk is 57.8x face. Reports from the FUN show are dealers paying between 42x and 49x.

Over 20% discounts on junk seem normal. You can also buy it below spot at 49x face.

True, unfortunately for me, my local guy won't sell it below spot. Shipping fees eat up the difference on smaller out of state purchases.

There's several Youtube videos of people attending the 2026 FUN coin show in Orlando. People were lined up to get in, lots of buying/selling. Here's one video of a guy checking 90% prices at the show.

Apparently that video that happened the latter part of last week - it's Monday now - is hopelessly out of date as silver prices ripped since that guy was there.

Spot prices a few days old, one day old or even several hours old might be "hopelessly" out of date. I still enjoyed watching the video, the below/above spot buy/sell ranges and thought others might too.
