Ridiculous error, amazing someone will pay money for this. I don't even want to call it an error. What's next "dime struck on an unsearched roll of wheat cents"

If I had the money to buy this on a whim, I'd post a video on youtube where I cut open the package and use it as a nail.

I still say the collar was removed.

Yes, almost certainly. The collar would have been disengaged/removed, the nail placed between the dies by hand(for centering purposes), and then a one stroke cycle on the press. That would also limit the timeframe to the slower Bliss and Graebner vertical presses that are no longer used for business strikes. The high speed Schuler horizontal presses have been used for 10-15 years now and strike 750 coins/minute, I don't think they are capable of being fed by hand for a one-off strike.

A legitimate error would not have made it past quality control unless the whole gang was asleep on the job. I don't buy it for a minute.

Wouldn't the Schuler presses have some kind of speed control to for instance have some set up strikes before going full speed. Still kind of cool in my books but needed a lot of help in it's creation and distribution

You don't have to worry about things like collars if you made the dies (clandestinely hubbed off a dime) in a competent private machine shop.

They would have just struck the die straight onto the nail, probably for test purposes. You just need a press, not specifically a coining press.

I guess the reason this item is garnering bidding is that PCGS has slab it with their guarantee and a large auction house Heritage, not surprised it would reach 10,000.00

Yep, a press in an automotive shop for pressing bearings onto hubs and things like that would work.
Rest in Peace

Hey Farva, what's the name of that restaurant you like with all the goofy stuff on the walls and the mozzarella sticks?

You knew exactly what I was thinking when I wrote that!

All kidding aside, this "error" is no error.
