I found this coin sometime ago in a roll I had purchased, My first thought was this penny looks different, it looks lke gold.. So I searched it and to my surprise there are a FEW penny errors that were struck on the 2.50 gold indian head planchets so can anyone tell me how to find out?!! It is ALOT thinner and weighs 2.7 Grams so I assume its on the wrong planchet or am I wrong? What are you all's thoughts? ANY help is appreciated!! thanks! Edited by errordigr 12/24/2015 5:46 pm

to the CCF What you have is a heavily damaged Indian Head cent. It was likely corroded and someone harshly cleaned it to remove the corrosion. Reasons to support my thinking: 1. Gold doesn't corrode 2. If it was a gold planchet, it would weigh more -MV

a damaged IHC. Still a good find in a bank roll, though.

UPDATE:: After posting this, I thought id investigate a bit more so I got a jewelry loop and took a closer look at this coin, I don't know why I didn't do this before.. Anyway what I found is QUITE INTERESTING!! On the obv there is another coin indent in which you can somewhat see on these pics, "the indent on the left" is that of another coin and the date is there too.. on the rev it says faintly but DEFINITELTLY READABLE 2 1/2 Dollars.. Any suggestions now?

If it is mirrored on the coin, then it was squashed by another coin.

Your coin was not struck on a gold planchet, it is much too light for a Quarter Eagle. Your coin is obviously severely corroded and gold does not corrode. Without better images, I cannot see it being anything but a severely corroded and damaged Indian Head cent struck on a normal bronze planchet.

if you are talking about that black gunk being corrosion, it isn't.. its a sticky substance: not sure what it is but everyone tells me not to clean it so I'm not risking it.. I have an appointment to have it looked at so I will post the results..

When we mentioned corrosion, we were not talking about the black stuff. We meant the rough and pitted surfaces. Quote: I also have a 1942/3 penny with multiple 3s on it I have no idea what you're talking about. Could you please post some pics?

Hey better safe than sorry! Good luck and have fun learning! I went through more trial and errors than most but it is awesome through and through. If Coop sees this he should have plenty of links on coin errors and their causes.
