Well, the OTL SBA dollar's main problem was being confused with a quarter. This design, with a left-facing head on one side and an eagle on the other, would inevitably be perceived as a fancy quarter (even more so than the actual SBA).

Also, I agree the design is a bit too busy; and while this is much better art indeed, the actual SBA dollar wasn't that ugly.
And, um, why is there a stick, well, sticking out of Liberty's neck? (I know it's the continuation of the stick that the cap is on, but it looks very silly, and why is the cap on a stick in the first place?)

Incidental question: much like the Eisenhower dollar, the SBA dollar does not directly give any indication of who the person featured on it is (something that, apparently, was almost unheard of for European coinage, as indicated in a recent CCF thread); which makes me wonder whether there was anyone who thought that the coin actually featured a particularly elderly looking Liberty.

I like the scary mary design. I think it would have been better than SBA, but then again SBA herself is a good choice for a woman on US Currency.

I don't know if I really care for this design... Guess I would have to see this coin in person to get a better opinion of it...

IMHO almost anything would have been better than the SBA design. I hated this coin from the moment I first saw it in the late 70's. I have a complete set of them only because they are part of the focus of my current collection. I keep them stored away.

I like the liberty design, I think it could have worked with some minor tweaks. As for the SBA reverse, it was good for the Ike dollars but did not work for me in the smaller format. I also think it showed a real lack of originality not to change the reverse design, but hey, congress is the reverse of progress.
