Hi Gang,

Having time this morning I visited some of the government sites. Mainly the Bureau of Engraving & Printing and the mint. I was somewhat astonished at the prices that the BEP is charging for it's products.

A copy of the Declaration of Independence $179.00. The last one I bought from them was $3.50.

A souvenir card is $20.00. A couple of years ago they were charging $3.50 for these also and they were better quality than what I'm seeing now.

A uncirculated 1999 $5.00 star note. The asking price is $16.00.

Is it just me or is the BEP really overpricing their products?

I got that impression also. Theoretically, they can continue to raise the prices until sales begin to suffer.

In the movie National Treasure, Nicholas Cage's character bought a copy of the Declaration of Independene at the Natioanl Archive's store for $35. Must be because the movie is great...I recommend it.

Im sorry ,,, I have a problem with any Tax supported govenmental agency selling my property for a profit !!! I buy Proof coins from the mint I can almost understand the reason for the cost since these are created specifically for collectors , but mint sets, rolls and bags of coins minted for circulation? charge me 1.00 for the packaging and a reasonable amount for shipping but the coins should be face value, after all who's coins are they ?

When I was in elementary school, we went to Independence Hall in Philadelphia for a field trip one year. I bought a copy of The Gettysburg Address for $3. It is really cool-looking too on simulated parchment. Guess that goes to show how old I am

Unforunately the Mint and BEP have learned that we will pay out the nose for many of these products offered. Luckily the secondary market has covered us on most of the items. Until we stop buying each piece of garbage that they offer as if it were gold, they will continue to raise the prices.
