Would the "ghosting" be a result of "die-clash" that has been polished out ? ?

Thanks for sharing.

Ghosting is caused by PIDT (Progressive Indirect Die Transfer). It's only present on LDS and VLDS (Late and Very Late Die State) coins and is caused when one die transfers its design through the planchet- with each strike, the obverse design minutely deforms the reverse die with the force that passes through the planchet. This continues until it's visible after many thousands of strikes. The reverse die shows the 'ghost' of the obverse design because the different parts of the planchet receive different amounts of force from the die, which affects the area of the reverse die on the other side.

Thanks for posting John1. I now have a clear understanding of what ghosting is. Things seem to make a lot more sense when I read about it on this forum.
