There are two being auctioned on ebay at the moment. Beth seem to be expensive compared to prices I have paid prior... Are either of them worth the money? any preferences and reason why?....

Tread very carefully with these, mashisback. Fyi, the seller of the Maximian is on Forum's Notorious Fake Sellers List.

I thought you were more into lots of uncleaned or partially cleaned bronzes than the slick gold stuff...

I don't like the looks of the Aureus and as Bob said he is on the fake seller list. Personally I would not take the chance.

If you look at the edge of the Romanus III you can see where it was mounted as a piece of jewelry. I think this is a copy also, though a very good one.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the advice and guidance, I will stay clear of these.

Yes Bob, I definitely am more into my uncleaned, have lots on the go at the moment, they are my hobby, but the gold ones, they are to pass down to my boy. I have 6 at the moment, haven't purchased one for over a year but I paid an average of about £230 for these, so was quite surprised when I seen ebay ones selling for nearer £500. At £230 I could be confident on them being worth at least that amount in 20 years time if my boy chose to sell rather than keep/ collect... but at £500 I'm not sure it would be.

Well, if you have 6 real roman Aureus coins, you probably shouldn't have a problem getting 10x that price right now..

Sorry for the confusion Arnoldoe, I don't have any Aureus gold coins, all 6 of mine are Byzantine. I guess from your statement, this is why they were more expensive, being Roman rather than Byzantine? if your interested, heres some quick pics..

Nice looking set of Byzantine AV's, mashisback. Of course one needs to be extremely careful with these as there are MANY fakes of solidi out there, including Constans II and Heraclius issues (as, I believe, we see included here). If you're not already doing so, be sure to check potential purchases against the fake reports at Forumancientcoins.com and forgerynetwork.com - and make sure to never purchase from sellers on the "NFSL" (Notorious Fake Sellers List") at Forum.
