I had a couple of these, sold one. Before I sold it I replaced the cells so the buyer would have a working unit. I think a decade is the outer limit of their life, even if they're not in use.
Yeah, I kept one for my collection. :-)
I thought the functioning LED was cool enough. It also has a photo sensor that will turn the LED off a few seconds after the sensor is covered, whether the box's cover is closed, or not. The on-off isn't linked to the position of the cover, it's photo-activated.
