Very informative post. Thank you for writing this. Saved me alot of time. I think what I'll do instead of paying over $600 for shipping and insurance is just wait until there's a coin show in the states with PCGS grading offered and just fly down there get my coins graded and and make a vacation out of it. I sent one coin down (1880 2 dollar gold Nfld au-58) worth about $6000 to PCGS there in the begging of December I just got them back today. I sent it with Canada post with no insurance and I found my self really worried that it would be stolen or lost and wasn't worth the stress for me. Again thanks for sharing your experience and what you learned from it.

Eddie.....if you're choosing Canadapost, send it Expresspost.
It costs about $25, I get no insurance, but it's guaranteed delivery in three days.
Send it on a Monday, so it won't have a chance to sit in a warehouse over the weekend, where some low life person may get nosey and open up a few packages.
As I mentioned above this is what I do and I can honestly say I sleep very well when the package is in transit, but then again, I'm not one to worry about losing a few hundred (or thousand) dollars (not that I'm wealthy, it's just my life philosophy about not 'crying over spilt milk').

I have sent coins to PCGS and it is frustrating I sent them through Canada Post padded envelope regular mail with signature required when they arrive at PCGS I think it took 10 days delivery but have never had problems this way and have never lost any coins. The lady at Canada Post told me that is the best way to send them with a signature required said she can't remember anyone never getting there mail that way you can tract the travel location of your coins. I usually put down that they are tokens on custom papers to send them to PCGS it is accepted from Canada Post and Customs I have never had a problem with this either. When PCGS sent them back to me I had a bill from Customs Canada saying that I have to pay tax on the grading service PCGS performed for me on the coins all in all a bit stressful but not bad I would rather send through a dealer but they have none in the Western Canada that will do it they all say to much trouble for them to perform this service for collectors.

There are very valid reasons that a lot of dealers , ourselves included will no longer allow others to send their coins to US TPGs from Canada . First and foremost it is a violation of US law concerning transport of Goods You are Commercially only allowed to transport goods that belong to your self or your own Corporation. You are not allowed to transport goods belonging to others unless you have a proper shipping company like Chit Chat or Letter Box or a third Party cross border shipper. Sure you can slide it through but good luck if you get caught. Most insurers will not cover a third party loss if this happens. Thirdly if you have Submission privileges with the TPGs it is only for your OWN coins , either personal or Corporate. This is clearly stated in the fine print of the TPGs . Submission centres are excepted but it costs a lot more to be one of these.

PCGS doesn't care one bit if dealers submit for customers, they even advertise that ability of them on their website as well as countless dealers advertising they do it on their own sites.

Yeah Doubleeagle I did send it through canada post express but I think where I sent it during the Christmas rush it took a bit longer. I wish I could have a attitude like that about not crying over spilt milk, but I collect mostly higher graded Newfoundland coins. I don't have a lot of money or anything ether and only have about 15 coins in my collection. So to lose one of my few coins I have would devastate me, special that I spend a high percentage of my revenue towards them. Almost like investing most of your money in stocks and having all your shares go to 0.00 , I'll probably just fly down there once every few years and create a memory out of them getting graded. Thanks for your comments!

I am thinking about sending some coins to PCGS, but am a bit concerned about the return shipping costs, it seems very high, as I am looking at multiple submissions. If I understand correctly, I can ship multiple submissions in one box, but then each submission will be returned individually. Unless I have a USPS or FedEx account, then multiple submissions can be shipped together: #10 - Fee Calculation ... Shipping cost "You may not combine shipping for multiple orders unless you are utilizing your own USPS Express Mail or FedEx account." https://www.PCGS.com/submissionguideAs a new member I would be using the 8 grading vouchers and probably send in around 20-30 coins Raw coins - Various Modern and pre-1965 coins (Economy and Regular) (2-3 submissions)Crossover - Some ICCS and NGC coins I would like to include in a PCGS registry set. (1-2 submissions depending on coin values)Regrade - A possible upgrade candidate in older green holder (1 submission)A few questions1. Would it be worth it to keep the "Landon" source on a couple large cents? 2. Keep Canada gold hoard in original case or get them graded (1912,13,14 $5)? 3. I am thinking of shipping them from US and receiving them in US (seems easiest based on Pacific's comments and I am only about 20 mins form border) 4. Variety recognition for 1935 $1 SWL- currently in ICCS, but might just cut it out and send as raw Overall, it seems like I have a bunch of categories that will require several submission form which would result in 4-6 shipments and a lot of overhead/processing fees. Am I looking at this wrong? or is there a better way to do this?

IMHO
1. Yes, keep the Landon pedigree. 2. I do not see the "Canada Gold Hoard" label as adding value. 3. If you have the option of using a US postal address - do it. Much less expensive to retrieve them by car. Suggest removing them from shipping box and tucking them in a briefcase or luggage bag when crossing the border. 4. I believe PCGS does not recognize SWL for the 1935 $1

Man after reading this I don't think I'll ever involve myself in the slabbing hobby costs a lot, very time consuming, never thought it would be this difficult.

It might be worthwhile to locate a PCGS authorized dealer and have them send it in for you. You might save on shipping and certainly would avoid the hassle, although you would pay a fee to have someone do it on your behalf.

I've sent coins through Canada Post with signature required at PCGS took about 10 days to get there from BC. The next order I sent was through FEDEX cost a lot more and took about 3-4 weeks for 2-3 day delivery US Customs held them until the proper paper work was completed and sent to them. The agent in Kamloops refused to fill the Customs order out the way FEDEX wanted it filled in the end I had to do it properly for them to release them to PCGS you have to pay a tariff on anything valued over $2000.00 I think that was the amount Both ways were a pain in the you no what

PCGS will send your coins back in one shipment even if you have different submission times.
But make sure you leave written instructions on the top of every copy of the submission forms to "hold all returns until all are complete and to be sent back in one shipment".
In addition, call PCGS just to make sure this is so, as it's been a few years since this last happened with my last PCGS submission.

PCGS recently sent out an email that domestic (USA) shipping charges will be decreasing on January 2nd 2019. They didn't say by how much and it may not be a lot, but anything cheaper is always good. You may be able to combine some of your tiers a little bit but without knowing what it is it's hard to say.

Thanks for the replies so far. Glad to hear about combined return shipping, It seemed a bit ridiculous if each submission would be shipped back individually.
Does PCGS use current market values (closer to coinsandcanada) or the charelton/trends fantasy when establishing whether a coin qualifies for Economy/Regular/etc...?
This is what I am looking to submit so far. Some are not valuable enough cost/benefit wise, but I would like to upgrade my registry set and protect a few more securely.
