I believe this is an imitation British gold guinea, perhaps a token? But before I toss it in a drawer, could someone confirm that for me?   |

The green spots of verdigris tells me instantly that this coin is not gold .

It is, clearly and unambiguously, a card game token resembling a guinea, and not an actual guinea. If you compare the lettering around the shield, it does not match what you find on a genuine coin. Rather, it's a coded advertisement for the company that made the tokens.

Thanks to you both. I know nothing about old foreign gold, and now I don't need to think about this token anymore. Good point, Trout, about the verdigris.

I wouldn't worry too much about this not being a genuine guinea, This is quite a nice example of a gaming token as most of them are pretty worn and knocked about. Yours appears to be in quite good condition. Nice Token  |

Certainly more common than the real thing. I have a couple of these...sometimes the writing around the reverse says "in memory of the good old days"

Many were holed to use on watch chains.
I have seen some which closely resemble a guinea but gold weighs X2 of brass.
I believe there is a book on these and they have a small following.

The tokens I think are usually brass. I have seen them sold in quite large groups before, they are typically not to hard to find.
