Could there have been liquid on the planchet or die when struck. still trying to figure out the reasoning behind the Bumpy surface. Worn die doesn't explain that, or does it? and if it does explain it, how come there are no other such example in any year or mint mark?
I'm just severely baffled. I'm currently trying to contact the Mint for their information. I heard from 'skip', at ICG, that the part that would be contacted closed...?!? sent my letter to MINT HQ.

The cottage cheese texture in the center of the reverse face is another manifestation of this die deformation error.

Has the cottage cheese surface appeared on other uncirculated coins? where could I find the image?

I have not seen the cottage cheese texture in association with any other die deformation or any coin for that matter. Like the flared die face, this pattern of deformation is unique among US coins. Error coin writer and researcher.

Mike: Could this be a case of that die didn't get tempered before it was used?

It could trace back to improper heat treatment (annealing, tempering, quenching), poor quality die steel, or the wrong grade of steel. There's no way for me to tease apart these possibilities.

If just one die is affected, then I would reason it wasn't tempered. If there were several dies affected, I would lean towards the stock material issue.

Since it's just one die, you're probably right that faulty heat treatment is the cause.
