DBM Pillar of the Community Canada 9866 Posts	Posted 04/10/2016 01:38 am PMD for sure but I don't think it was done with heat. The coin has a steel core that is first plated with nickel, then with copper, and finally again with nickel. Nickel melts at about 1500 and copper at about 1100, unlikely one could melt the nickel layer without affecting the copper layer beneath. Possibly done somehow with HCl.
