Quote: 90-95% of my collection is coins valued under $10 per coin ChildOfTheWheat, wouldn't that be more like the opposite of a mistake? As opposed to, say, overpaying for just 1 coin in your collection? Besides, step aside for this one.. When my husband was about 9 or so, (not really sure, I do not dare ask him while I type this..) he turned a 1944-D Lincoln Cent into... wait for it... well, you get the picture. He still has it, too. It looks terrible, by the way.

As a newbie quantity over quality was my main problem. I bought a lot of stuff that if I were to sell now would either not have much interest or would sell for bargain basement prices since they are so common. I had a hard time detecting problem coins and bought quite a few that were cleaned or had environmental problems. Still make some newbie mistakes nowadays, most common is that I pay too much for nice but unexceptional coins that I could purchase much cheaper on ebay. I enjoy supporting the local economy by patronizing local coin dealers but I really need to draw the line after getting burned in too many instances. They might be nice upstanding people with a lot of knowledge but I can't afford their margins.

I suppose it is okay as long as he keeps it. But if it ever gets out in the wild...

Naah, that thing is so ugly and obvious, chances are it will be inherited as a novelty by one of our kids, since it's got a story. We have a few coins that were Ed's father's which have little value, but we keep because they mean a lot to Ed. Our family is a big gang of sentimental succors.

I was thinking more of the fright factor than anyone thinking it was real. Or was I? I think the kids will appreciate it, though.
