I am no expert, so if I am in the minority, kindly ignore me.

Think that is quite generous, personally. At XF40, I would expect to see the smaller feathers under the leading edge of the wings and some feather detail towards the head on the obverse. I think it is definitely (a bit) better than a F on the obverse. Reverse looks like a solid VF. I'm used to seeing Stack's be overgraded like this, but not usually this far off on a normal submission.

I think XF40 is really generous as well. I think the reverse has a weak strike but still looks to me to be in the VF20 - VF25 range. These are not really my speciality either but I'm basing my assumption on ones I have seen in the past.

Edit: Maybe the sellers pics are holding things back we can't see?

I would say it just makes EF-40 ,nice pleasing original coin . I didn't see any problems.

I agree that the pix make it difficult to see what the TPG saw, and think this is one of those many cases where eye appeal disagrees with grade. The TPG probably graded on the basis of wear, not weakness of strike, and gave credit for the perceived original minted state of the coin. EF40, but I wouldn't pay an EF40 price.

That coin is way overgraded. It's a VF-25. I don't know why NGC does this to itself at times.

My thought is that it is a VF-35 or XF-40. The reverse strike is really weak, but lots of FEs exhibit that condition because of the location of prominent devices that align back to front.

I don't have a lot of experience with Flying Eagle cents, so I may be off here, but if this is an XF-40, they must be really bad photos. Based on the photos, I might be persuaded to go as high as VF-25, but I'm more comfortable at VF-20.
