I signed up with Stacks but I cannot see the current bid... Just me?
EDIT: it says "Passed"
That means it failed to sell? is it still being auctioned online then?

So, no sale on the 1804 $1 & the 1822 $5. Wonder if consignor will be able to locate a private buyer or is going to continue to hold these top of the market coins?

i don't think they are going to get the number they want. Based on what we can read and deduce, the market was "set" on this coin in the 1999 Child's sale by one overly ambitious collector who was willing to part with whatever money was required to own it. 17 years later, the figure paid is the minimum pursued but that figure is, again, established based on ambitious desire versus any semblance of market trend.
Obviously its difficult to establish market trends with coins of this caliber but be that as it may, it will be very difficult for this coin to ever recognize more than the next person is willing to pay for it versus having an FMV that can be the foundation gauge and starting point for sale.
I say this coin needs a good old $.99 cent no reserve start and let the bidding begin. My guess is it would end somewhere in the $2.5 to $3MM range on its best day.

What are you talking about? I watched it live. It opened at $7MM and ran up to over $10MM with spirited bidding from floor and online. Like everything in Pogue, it had no reserve, so it must have sold. After it closed, there was applause in the room. Edit: never mind. There WAS a reserve, we just didn't know about it during the auction. Apparantly, neither did the audience on the floor. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-a...dUSKCN0YF2PDI can't believe he wanted more than $10MM for the coin.

Quote: What are you talking about? I watched it live. It opened at $7MM and ran up to over $10MM oh The link I clicked showed it at $4MM with no action. I had no idea it did what it did. I thought it was a dead stick. My bad.

clicking on links for a $4MM coin? You're lucky you didn't bid by accident. That would be one heck of a conversation with the wife.

I know this post is old, but I still wanted to point out. This is where I say that the line between "priceless" and "worthless" is indeed a fine line. It seems that this coin is do valuable to its owner that they may never sell it.

I can't believe that the Pogue family passed on that bid for the 1804 dollar. How much did they expect to get? I believe that number they rejected would have been an all time record for a single coin by a small amount. The 1804 Dollars are not what they used to be. It has been called "The king of coins," but given its checkered past, especially the circumstances surrounding the production of the "1804 restrikes," the king has been "dethroned."

Assuming that this is a wealthy family, it may not really matter to them if they sell it now or in 10-20 years. Likewise the amount of money may not really matter, it may be just a matter of principle or be based on whatever the original collector instructed the heirs. It may just be part of the game.

-- what is disturbing is the cheap plastic holder for .50 cents. So I loudly ask WHY is the holder not made out of at least gold or some special way more exciting holder even an addition like a Fancy oak box etc. Just saying --- a basic plastic holder is insulting !

I'm fairly certain you'd need to be prequalified to bid on this coin, links or otherwise.
