- Look at all the marks on the obv device - tons of them. Gouges and scrapes on vest/lapel, circulation marks on cheek and upper parts of hair.
The hits are in non-focal point areas and very minor. There can't be "circulation marks", I pulled this coin from a sealed 1965 OBW roll.

- What appear to be scratches on the date
I don't anything on the date out of the norm for these.
Quote:
- Much dullness and wear on rev device - steps and top of LM worn down
That is not wear, it's a strike issue where the die didn't fill or was damaged.
Quote:
- Huge gouge in rev field below "AM"
Yes, there is a hit there.

- Poorly struck (look at Obv top rim / In God We Trust)
Strike will not effect the grade until you get to 67. Up to that point the
TPG's pretty much ignore strike issues in my experience.

Maybe there's a reason I'm not a pro grader, but at "first glance" I was thinking 58 on the low end, 63 on the high end.
Teach me - what am I missing if this really qualifies as a 66?
That's OK, this forum section is for learning and discussion. I've been known to toss out some controversial stuff for fun....all in the name of education.
With the
TPG's the grade is mostly about eye appeal and luster. Those are the first order of business as a grader typically only spends a few seconds on each coin. They are also big on the fields and any distractions in the focal points. This coin would go 66, 65 on a bad day, if I were to submit, for eye appeal, luster and clean fields.
