I bought an 1803 large cent off of ebay. When it arrived, I took it out of the cardboard flip to examine it with a magnifying glass. It felt real grainny and on the obverse side, it had a real small area that looks a bit like clean pitted copper under the surface. I took a small bit of never dull wading to rub on a small part of the edge, it does not clean up like copper but a brownish color comes off instead.....any idea's?

Buried in dirt and corroded a bit? Without pictures, we can only guess as to what you're describing.
Rest in Peace

I'm guessing a dirt find, too. Nothing wrong with that as long as there is no continued oxidation.

But pictures would help us tell with more certainty.

Looks like it was buried for a while.

I appreciate all the input, I just wanted to make sure it was legitimate and not a fake. Thanks all.

I agree with the rest: corroded, possibly from being buried.

VERY nice detail for the exposure it seems to have had. A nice one.
