The Lafayette dollar was sponsored by the Lafayette Memorial Commission (L-M-C). The primary project of the L-M-C was to create a fitting monument to General Lafayette and to then give it to the people of France during the Paris Exposition of 1900. The commemorative coin was used as a fund-raiser to support the costs associated with the monument; school children from around the US also raised funds for the statue, with almost $50,000 coming from their efforts. The Lafayette Memorial commemorative silver dollar is almost always referred to as a coin form "1900" based on what appears to be the coin's date on the reverse. Per the US Mint, however, the "1900" is not the coin's date, but rather the date of the Paris Exposition. Technically, the coin does not feature a date - the coins were struck on December 14, 1899.Lafayette Memorial Silver Dollar For more about the Lafayette dollar, see: - Lafayette Memorial Dollar- Lafayette Memorial Dollar - Revisited- Yorktown Medal vs. Lafayette Dollar- Lafayette Memorial Dollar - Coins with Hats ThreadOther of my stories about commemorative coins and medals can be found here: Read More: Commems Collection.
