Hey guys, I've come across another head scratcher that I believe to be Indian in origin (but I could be wrong:)) and I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction as to date, country, type, composition, ruler, etc. It's roughly the size of a nickel and it weighs approximately 8.5 grams. My apologies if the coin isn't oriented correctly in the images. As always any information would be greatly appreciated! JDRMCB

Dear JDRMCB,
This coin is an issue of Jodhpur, of the period of either Sardar sing or Sumar sing. Both the images are upside down. I shall try to correct the orientation and add an overlay shortly. Metal cannot be accurately inferred from pics. Copper issues called "Anna" in its half, one fourth and one eighth values and "Paisa" were in vogue. However, I am unable to correlate the weight with denomination. If it is silver and weighs roughly 10gms, it is a rupee. Half rupee will weigh between five and six grams. Thanks.

I am adding a few more details. I am not 100% sure about the reading "Sardar", but I think it is!! The parts of the Legend that confirms it as Jodhpur Obverse: "Sardar Maharaj zarb Jodhpur". Reverse: "Edward" and Devanagari letter "ma" (mintmark of Jodhpur during that period)

Here is an addition to the Tipu coins section of Mysore. This coin is issued from a mint "Abargarh" the exact location of the mint being obscure at present.

Dear Jay1234, This coin corresponds to coin number PS/059#004.Your second image needs to be rotated 90degrees clockwise. It reads "(sree)raja (siva). The first image holds the legend "chatrapati sree sivaji". I will have to consult reference books to ascertain weight. Exact perioid of issue also is still debated. Anyway I will get back with whatever I can find soon. Thank you.

Dear Jay1234, Here is what I could gather. Satara was a Rajput state in Maharashtra area where the rulers were known as "Chhatrapati"s. The most remarkable Chhatrapati was Maharaja Chhatrapati Shivaji Rao Bhonsle-I, who was a contemporary and the most dreaded adversary of the Mughal ruler Aurangazeb. The rulers' lineage of Satara is a long one and Shivaji-I has been one of the major contributors to the downfall of the Mughal empire after Aurangazeb. His disciples continued to rule Satara following Shivaji. Among them were Shivajirao-II and Shivajirao-III. Any among the Satara rajas could have issued coins with "Chhatrapati" on one side and "Sree raja" on the other. "Sree raja Siva" could possibly have been legend of any ruler who had "Sivaji" as his name or title. Please see the link below if it would help. Thanks. http://www.indianrajputs.com/view/satara

You have an excellent well preserved coin with full details on flan. This is IPS issue for sure. But unfortunately, I am unable to fit this to any particular IPS. Second image reads "qiran" seen on IPS coins issued in the name of Mughal emperors (part of their title "Badshah/Sahab qiran sani". I shall try to fix this. In the mean time you can try posting this to the unidentified coins group and even to other fora like World of Coins where better experts show up occasionally. You can search IPS section of zeno.ru also to find one like this if you are fortunate.Thanks.
