The last 9 in the date took a hit. Not an error.

Yes, the dent from a hit in the second 9 is pretty clear. You might see this sort of thing in nearly every area on the surfaces of most coins. If a hit is in the field, you will just see a nick. But it it's in the lettering or date, this is typical damage.

to the CCF!

The last 9 of the date and the marks on the bust are all post-mint damage. Damage to the outer digit of the date is fairly common and can be caused by counting/rolling machines as well as vending machines.

Less, I think. It's nicked heavily on the bust, for one thing, and the fields have issues. I'd guess retail about $10-12 at best, but difficult to sell as straight-grade in this condition.

I could be wrong But the area on Lincoln's neck and shoulder looks to me like a planchet flaw

It might be a lamination issue, or contact from something more destructive than another coin? Either way, does not add a premium for the coin. I feel it is vending machine damage on the last '9'. How to tell? Note that it is parallel to the rim. So something moving in line with the edge altered the coin.

That is really interesting about the gum ball/candy machines - wouldn't even have crossed my mind.
