I just went through 123 1939P nickels I had put aside for variety hunting. I have another 50 or so higher grade specimens to go through. Here's what I have so far:

18/123 1939P with the reverse of 1938 or about 15%

I used the S to identify most of the coins, VF coins for the most part, and occasionally the T in UNITED. Between both letters, I felt comfortable with the identifications. I'll update again once I get through the better grade coins.

I do wish I had kept the 39's I have dumped over the years.

I thought the same thing. Luckily I started keeping them more recently. Might be nice to have a roll of them with the 1938 RDV.

What about the T in UNITED? There's a split on then 1938 reverse design but not on the 1940 reverse design.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "split" on the T on the 1938 rev.

Hi Conder - the T in UNITED has a split in the right serif. It fooled me a while back as it looks like doubling but it is part of the design. On worn subjects and on later die state specimens the T as a primary diagnostic is reduced. Relying on the S in PLURIBUS becomes a better bet. But having both can help if there is damage in the particular area. If you can, browse images of early die state 1938 RDV and 1940 RDV. You will see the split is gone and a serif added to the S. As Bryan points out, on worn specimens our reliance on the weak steps vanishes and the other clues help to bear out what we have in hand.

Looking at Strike it Rich and Red Book price estimates, the value of 1939 nickels with the 1938 RDV are 10X more valuable than 1939 with 1940 RDV. I had been tossing 1939's I found back to the wild as they are readily available. However, it might be prudent of us to reconsider. I will going forward. I hadn't known about the S as a diagnostic but it's quick and worth a look when flipping for a mint mark and DDR specimens. Good luck folks.

Final tallies:

- (23/167) 1939 have the 1938 RDV (about 14%)
- (4/7) 1939D have the 1938 RDV
- (7/8) 1939S have the 1938 RDV

The D and S mint tallies are informational as the populations I have on hand are too small.

I've got almost 3 rolls of 39 Nickels... While I've gone through them for the doubled MONTICELLO error, I've never checked the reverses for the Rev of '38 and '40... Need to do this sometime soon!
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Thanks for all this info about the Jefferson nickel. I've got several completed sets from 38 to present and since all are in a Whitman Album, no place for different 38's, 39's or 40's. Just one of each. This would mean that manufacturers of Albums either don't know or don't care about 39 reverse differences. Also, probably little differences in over all values of sets with one of the other. I'll have to check at the next coin show to see if any dealers sell these separately.

Looks like the big 1939 DDR is the 1940 Reverse!
